Anyone Can Win at Poker

Did you know that anyone can win playing online poker? Notice that I said that anyone can win, but I didn’t say that anyone can win all the time. What makes Texas Holdem so appealing to online poker players is the simple fact that they can get lucky and win. In the long term that luck is supposed to even out and the good players will win, but in the short term anything can happen.

What many online poker players forget when playing at online poker sites is that even bad poker players can pick up good hands. We often forget when playing at online poker sites that even poker amateurs can pick up good cards and win pots. Every single day you see the countless hands where the amateur player continually calls with 9-7, K-6, J-5, etc.

As you play these players you start thinking that they continually play crap hands and then all of a sudden you get a lot of money in the pot and they turn over a pair of Aces. You think to yourself, “What happened?” The answer to that is that everyone will pick up good cards some of the time.

A lot of online poker players consider the amateurs “fish” because of their poor play. The fish play nearly every hand, do stupid things, and look bad doing them. The problem that happens for the good player though is that sometimes the fish will have a hand.

Just because a player plays a lot of hands foolishly, does not mean every one of his hands will be bad. It also puts you at a big disadvantage when they do have a hand. You are not expecting the big hand and you get into trouble.

The other problem that players run into against the amateur players is the luck factor. Let’s say you have Ace-King and the amateur player has 5-4 or something like that. You definitely have the advantage before the flop but it is not a huge edge. It is less than 2-1 actually. If the player happens to get lucky and flop a 5 or a 4 then he takes the lead. He could also flop a straight or flush draw.

Anything is possible, and even though you started with the best hand, you won’t always win.

Another thing you want to remember is that while the amateur player will make poor plays, not everyone else will. You need to keep in mind that a mix of amateurs and pros may be at the table. You need to keep in mind your own game and not worry if other players make mistakes. You can only hope to get your money in with the best hand. That is all you can do.

Keep your discipline and play your game. Always remember though that anyone can get a good hand from time to time and win money playing poker.
